The Government of India on Saturday said it is closely examining recent developments in the United States after the US Supreme Court struck down former President Donald Trump’s sweeping global tariffs. The Commerce Ministry stated that officials are assessing the implications of both the court ruling and subsequent announcements made by the US administration.
In its first formal reaction, the ministry confirmed it had taken note of the Supreme Court’s judgment delivered on Friday, as well as remarks made by Trump during a press conference following the decision. Officials indicated that while the ruling is significant for global trade dynamics, New Delhi is undertaking a detailed evaluation before drawing conclusions about its potential impact on India’s trade interests.
The Supreme Court ruled that tariffs imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) were not legally authorised, effectively striking down the measures introduced during Trump’s tenure. The court said the law does not empower the president to unilaterally impose tariffs under emergency provisions, a decision that could reshape the legal framework governing US trade policy.
Despite the setback, Trump signalled that his administration would pursue alternative mechanisms to restore broad-based tariffs. Addressing reporters, he said other options would be used to replace the measures rejected by the court and suggested that new approaches could potentially generate even greater revenue. Shortly thereafter, on February 21, Trump announced a fresh 10 percent global tariff on imports from all countries using different legal pathways, stating the move would take effect almost immediately.
Even as the tariff situation evolves, Trump clarified that ongoing trade discussions with India remain unaffected. He indicated that negotiations with New Delhi are still on track, offering some reassurance amid uncertainty triggered by the court’s intervention.
India and the United States are scheduled to hold a three-day round of talks beginning February 23 in the US to finalise the legal text of their proposed trade agreement. The meeting follows the adoption of a preliminary framework earlier this month after months of diplomatic friction, including disagreements over tariff measures and market access issues.
Officials in New Delhi are expected to factor the latest US policy shifts into their negotiating strategy. Trade experts note that while the immediate economic impact on India may be limited, the broader direction of US tariff policy could influence bilateral commerce, supply chains, and future market access discussions.
For now, the Commerce Ministry has emphasised a cautious approach, stating that all developments in Washington are being studied carefully. The outcome of the upcoming India-US trade meeting is likely to provide greater clarity on how both countries plan to navigate the evolving tariff landscape and maintain momentum in their economic partnership.
