In a significant development ahead of the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced Ratna Debnath, the mother of the victim of the 2024 RG Kar rape and murder case, as their candidate for the Panihati Assembly seat in the North 24 Parganas district. This move marks a critical moment in both her personal journey and the BJP's political strategy, as the party aims to challenge Mamata Banerjee's Trinamool Congress (TMC) after 15 years of governance in the state.
Debnath, who has been vocal about her daughter's tragic death, confirmed her decision to enter electoral politics after being in touch with the BJP for some time. Her candidacy is expected to bring intense focus to issues of law and order, women's safety, and justice, particularly in light of the emotionally charged RG Kar case, which led to widespread protests and a political standoff between the BJP and TMC.
The 2024 incident, in which Debnath’s 31-year-old daughter, a postgraduate trainee doctor, was found raped and murdered in RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, has become a rallying cry for the BJP. The case triggered major controversy, with the BJP accusing the TMC government of obstructing justice. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) was set up, and the case was later handed to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), resulting in the sentencing of Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer, to life imprisonment in January 2025. Despite this, Debnath has continued to demand "complete justice," rejecting state-provided compensation and questioning the broader handling of the case.
Debnath’s campaign is set to symbolize both personal loss and political assertion, and her candidacy in Panihati will likely play a key role in the BJP’s strategy to address systemic issues in the state. The BJP’s third list of candidates also includes figures like Dipanjan Chakrabarty, a former NSG officer, and several others aiming to bring fresh narratives to the electoral battleground. As the election nears, Debnath’s candidacy will bring significant attention to her personal fight for justice, while also contributing to the BJP’s broader push to unseat the ruling TMC in West Bengal.
