The Sridevi Chennai property dispute has reached the Supreme Court after MC Sivakami challenged a Madras High Court order dismissing her suit over 2.7 acres of land on East Coast Road. The property was sold to Sridevi’s family in 1988. Sivakami and her brother claim a legal share in the land, while the suit names Boney Kapoor, Janhvi Kapoor, Khushi Kapoor and other concerned parties. The Supreme Court has issued notice and ordered that status quo be maintained on the disputed property until the next hearing.

Madras High Court property case challenged in Supreme Court

The petitioner argued that the trial court had initially found a prima facie cause of action and considered the suit to be within the limitation period. Her counsel said the Madras High Court went beyond the preliminary stage by examining documents in detail, including questions about legal heirship and the validity of the concerned first marriage. The Kapoor family, however, argued that the sale deed was executed on April 19, 1988, while the suit was filed only in 2025. Their counsel said the petitioners became adults in 1995 and 1999 and maintained that the claim was therefore barred by limitation.

Kapoor family land dispute moves toward mediation

During the hearing, the Supreme Court examined questions about MC Chandrasekaran’s share in the property and the petitioners’ claim as his children. The bench then encouraged both sides to explore an amicable settlement and said a retired High Court judge could be appointed as mediator. The parties have been asked to participate in mediation, while the matter is listed for December 18 to review its progress. Until then, the status quo on the property will remain in place.
