India may be witnessing a quiet reproductive shift as GLP-1 weight loss drugs gain popularity across the country. Doctors in major cities are reporting an increasing number of unexpected pregnancies among women who previously struggled with infertility. Popularly referred to as “Ozempic babies” globally, these surprise conceptions are now being observed in India just months after GLP-1 injectables such as Mounjaro, Wegovy and Ozempic entered the market. While these medicines were originally designed for type 2 diabetes, their powerful impact on weight loss and metabolic health appears to be restoring fertility in ways many patients did not anticipate.
Medical experts explain that GLP-1 drugs do not directly cause pregnancy. Instead, they improve insulin sensitivity, reduce inflammation and help regulate hormonal imbalances. Conditions such as PCOS, PCOD, irregular periods and anovulation, which affect millions of Indian women, are closely linked to obesity and metabolic dysfunction. As weight decreases and hormonal pathways stabilise, ovulation can return naturally, often without obvious symptoms. Doctors like Dr Anoop Misra and Dr Rujul Jhaveri confirm that they have seen several such cases despite counselling patients about contraceptive precautions. Many women, believing they were still infertile, were caught off guard by positive pregnancy tests.
Despite the positive fertility impact, doctors strongly warn that GLP-1 drugs are not considered safe during pregnancy. Treatment is usually stopped immediately once pregnancy is planned or detected. Recent studies also show that women who discontinue GLP-1 therapy during pregnancy may experience rapid weight gain and higher complication risks. Pharmaceutical sales data further highlight the scale of adoption, with Mounjaro and Wegovy recording massive sales in December 2025 alone. Experts stress that women of reproductive age using these injections must receive proper counselling about contraception, as oral contraceptive pills may also be less effective due to delayed gastric emptying caused by GLP-1 drugs. Physicians believe that with awareness and informed medical guidance, restored fertility can become a positive life change rather than an unexpected shock for Indian women navigating modern weight loss treatments.
