Taunton was travelling along Interstate 95 during a severe rainstorm on July 18 when she stopped to assist people involved in a hydroplaning accident. While she was helping, another vehicle lost control and headed toward the group. Taunton reportedly pushed one person out of danger and absorbed the impact herself. She suffered critical injuries, including internal bleeding, broken ribs and a ruptured diaphragm, and required multiple major surgeries. Her family says she faces a lengthy recovery that will prevent her from working and create significant medical and household expenses.

Taunton shares three children with her husband, Joe. The fundraising campaign was established to cover medical costs, groceries, household bills and other expenses while the family focuses on her treatment and rehabilitation.
