Jeff Bezos Says AI Could Make Three-Day Workweeks Possible

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos believes artificial intelligence could transform employment by improving productivity and allowing people to work fewer days while earning enough to support their families. He also discussed AI-driven job changes, Amazon layoffs, engineering innovation and America's competition with China in space exploration.

Jeff Bezos Predicts Three-Day Workweeks With AI

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has suggested that advances in artificial intelligence could eventually make three-day workweeks and single-income households more achievable. Speaking to Fox News host Bret Baier, Bezos said higher productivity could give workers greater freedom to choose how much they work. He explained that some employees might earn enough to support their families while working just three days a week. Although he did not provide a timeline or specific economic model, Bezos believes AI could improve efficiency and create opportunities for a better work-life balance.

AI Productivity Could Change Employment Patterns

Bezos challenged concerns that artificial intelligence would inevitably cause widespread unemployment. Instead, he suggested that increased productivity could eventually create labour shortages as fewer people would need multiple jobs to maintain their lifestyles. During the interview, Baier questioned him about Amazon's recent reduction of approximately 30,000 corporate positions. Bezos attributed the company's workforce adjustments partly to its significant expansion during the COVID-19 pandemic. He acknowledged concerns about AI replacing workers but remained optimistic about its long-term economic benefits.

Prometheus AI Startup Targets Engineering Innovation

Discussing his AI startup Prometheus, which he co-founded and co-leads, Bezos outlined plans to develop an "artificial general engineer" capable of helping people transform ideas into physical products. He said the goal was to make advanced engineering tools accessible even to people without specialised technical training. Bezos predicted that AI could deliver double-digit percentage improvements in economic productivity. Asked whether AI investment had become a financial bubble, he acknowledged the uncertainty but argued that valuable technologies could continue benefiting society even when some investors suffered losses.

Bezos Highlights US-China Competition in Space

Beyond artificial intelligence, Bezos discussed the growing competition between the United States and China in space exploration. The Blue Origin founder stressed the importance of America maintaining its leadership in lunar missions and expressed confidence that US astronauts could return to the Moon in 2028. His remarks highlighted the connection between technological innovation, economic competitiveness and space exploration. While his predictions about shorter workweeks remain uncertain, Bezos believes advances in AI could reshape employment, engineering and productivity across the global economy.
