Elon Musk has responded positively to Reliance Industries’ statement on satellite internet competition in India, writing “Much appreciated” on X. The exchange follows Musk’s recent criticism of Reliance over Starlink’s delayed entry into the Indian market. The developments come as US Secretary of State Marco Rubio visits India, with a stop at Reliance’s Jamnagar refinery planned as part of his trip. No direct link has been established between Rubio’s visit and the regulatory dispute.
Musk Responds to Reliance’s Statement
Reliance said it welcomes competition in satellite communications, including from Starlink, provided all operators follow Indian laws and policies. Musk replied to the statement on Friday, October 16, with “Much appreciated.” His response marks a softer public tone after he accused Reliance chairman Mukesh Ambani and other powerful interests of obstructing Starlink’s launch. However, neither company has announced an agreement or a change in government policy.

Reliance Says Jio Is Also Awaiting Clearances
Reliance said Indian and foreign companies must follow the same approval process. It also said Jio’s satellite internet service is awaiting government clearances, distinguishing the licensing process from the additional approvals needed to begin service. India has granted satellite communications licences to Starlink, Jio and Bharti-backed Eutelsat OneWeb. However, the companies still need security clearance before they can launch services in the country.
Starlink Says Its India Infrastructure Is Ready
Starlink said it has worked with Indian regulators, industry groups and telecom operators for more than five years. The company said it has built dedicated systems, gateways and other infrastructure in India to serve local internet traffic securely, and that this infrastructure has the required government approvals. Starlink said it is ready to provide high-speed internet in India, but has not announced a commercial launch date. Infrastructure approvals do not remove the separate security-clearance requirement for beginning service.
Rubio’s Planned Jamnagar Stop Adds Context
Rubio’s India visit includes a planned stop at Reliance Industries’ Jamnagar refinery, which is operated by the company chaired by Mukesh Ambani. The trip also comes amid wider India-US trade and energy discussions, including concerns over tariffs linked to Russian oil purchases. The visit and the Starlink-Reliance dispute are concurrent developments. No direct connection between them has been reported.
