Binance Security Breach: $2.54 Billion in Crypto Assets Frozen

Cryptocurrency exchange Binance is investigating a major security incident after approximately $2.54 billion in digital assets were frozen on October 29, 2026. The suspected cyberattack prompted temporary withdrawal restrictions and raised concerns about potentially large cryptocurrency losses. Binance maintains that customer funds remain safe while investigators work to establish what happened.

Binance Security Breach Investigation

Binance acknowledged reports of a potential security issue and launched an urgent investigation involving its internal security teams and industry partners.

Blockchain analysts identified suspicious transfers from wallets associated with the exchange. Security firm Blockaid reported examining approximately $3.3 billion in unusual outflows across Ethereum, Arbitrum and Avalanche.

Some analysts suggested that the overall value of potentially compromised assets could be higher, but the final amount stolen has not been established.

Tether and Circle Freeze Crypto Assets

Stablecoin issuers Tether and Circle moved quickly to restrict assets associated with the suspected breach.

Tether reported freezing approximately $1.57 billion in USDT, while Circle froze more than $800 million in USDC.

Ripple and other cryptocurrency companies also participated in freezing related assets, bringing the reported total to approximately $2.54 billion.

These measures aim to prevent suspicious funds from moving further. However, frozen assets should not automatically be treated as recovered customer funds.

Binance Suspends Crypto Withdrawals

Binance temporarily paused deposits and withdrawals while conducting security checks and tracing suspicious transactions.

The exchange also suspended trading on selected products, including Binance Alpha, as part of its response.

The company said it was working with law enforcement, token issuers and blockchain intelligence firms to investigate the incident.

Binance warned customers to avoid unofficial links, suspicious messages and requests for account information.

Bitcoin Price Falls After Binance Incident

The security concerns affected cryptocurrency markets, with Bitcoin falling more than 3% following initial reports of the suspected attack.

Other digital assets also experienced selling pressure as investors assessed the possible financial impact.

The incident revived concerns about the security of cryptocurrency exchanges, which store substantial amounts of customer assets in digital wallets.

It also drew comparisons with the $1.5 billion Bybit theft reported in February 2025.

Binance Customer Funds and Cybersecurity

Binance reassured customers that their funds remained safe despite the ongoing investigation.

Co-founder Changpeng Zhao, who no longer manages the exchange, said the incident appeared to involve a hack and expressed confidence that affected users would be covered.

Binance co-founder Yi He also said the company would cover hacking losses.

Investigators have yet to confirm the full cause, extent and financial consequences of the incident.

Further updates will be important for determining how much cryptocurrency was stolen, how much remains frozen and when normal platform operations can fully resume.
