Dublin, California, may soon welcome a major public art installation that could redefine its downtown skyline and cultural identity. The Dublin City Council is reviewing a proposal for a 22-foot stainless steel kinetic sculpture called Crossing Paths, which would be installed at the busy intersection of Dublin Boulevard and Village Parkway. Designed by Ride Art Studio, the sculpture is envisioned as a dynamic and symbolic representation of Dublin’s evolution as a cultural and geographical crossroads in the Bay Area.
The proposed artwork features two curved, towering columns etched with intricate Celtic knot designs, reflecting the city’s Irish namesake and cultural heritage. Crowning each column are shamrocks designed to spin in the wind, balanced on a 45-degree axis to create a continuous, unpredictable movement. This motion, according to the artists, symbolizes the city’s themes of growth, renewal, freedom, and fluid cultural intersections.
According to the official concept description submitted by Ride Art Studio, “The kinetic movement of the shamrocks, as they interact with the wind, talks about freedom of movement and creates a timeless conversation of growth and renewal.” This symbolic motion, paired with the architectural curves, visually represents how Dublin stands at the intersection of past, present, and future—physically and culturally.
A New Downtown Landmark with a Visual Impact
The kinetic sculpture will not just impress during the day it is designed to illuminate the night sky with programmable, color-changing LED lights, transforming the area into a vibrant, walkable attraction visible from afar. City officials hope that the sculpture will quickly become an iconic feature, enhancing Dublin’s downtown experience and helping to define the identity of the Village Parkway District. While there was some early concern from the Heritage and Cultural Arts Commission regarding the potential overuse of the shamrock as a symbol throughout the city, the commission ultimately voted 6-1 in favor of moving the proposal forward.
This sculpture project is a part of the City of Dublin’s 2024–2029 Capital Improvement Program and is funded through the Public Art Fund. The total proposed budget includes a $230,000 artist commission along with $170,000 allocated for site improvements such as lighting and structural enhancements to ensure the safety and visibility of the installation.
