Iran Uses Cluster Bombs as Israel Conflict Escalates

The conflict between Iran and Israel surged into a more dangerous phase on Friday as both sides traded heavy missile and drone attacks for the eighth straight day. For the first time in the current escalation, Iran deployed missiles equipped with cluster munitions a highly controversial weapon after Israel launched targeted strikes on Iranian nuclear infrastructure.

One of the Iranian missiles struck a hospital in southern Israel, injuring at least 71 people and prompting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to vow a “full price” would be exacted from Iran’s leadership. Netanyahu claimed Israel is ahead of schedule in its military campaign, stating that their forces are capable of targeting all major Iranian nuclear facilities, including the fortified Fordo site.

The White House confirmed that President Donald Trump is weighing military support for Israel. The administration acknowledged intelligence that Iran could develop a nuclear weapon within “a couple of weeks” if Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei authorizes it. A decision on US involvement is expected within the next 14 days.

Meanwhile, diplomatic backchannels remain open. Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, has reportedly held multiple phone conversations with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi, attempting to defuse the growing threat of a full-scale regional war.

  • The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) continued precision strikes on key Iranian military and nuclear targets.

  • Tehran appointed Brigadier General Majid Khadami as the new head of intelligence for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) following the death of his predecessor and two senior commanders in Israeli airstrikes earlier this week.

  • Nearly 40 US military aircraft have been covertly relocated from a major American base in Qatar, seen as a precautionary move to protect assets from potential Iranian retaliation.

  • Iran’s barrage of drones and missiles continues, though Israel claims its Iron Dome and David’s Sling systems have intercepted a majority of incoming threats.

With no ceasefire talks in sight and the stakes climbing amid nuclear concerns, global powers are watching closely. The use of cluster munitions, often condemned under international law, marks a serious escalation and further complicates diplomatic efforts to contain the crisis. As the world holds its breath, the coming days could determine whether this remains a limited regional conflict or spirals into something far more catastrophic.
