Severely wounded Gaza children evacuated to US to receive medical care in North Texas

In an emotional and historic moment, two severely injured children from Gaza have arrived in North Texas to receive critical medical treatment as part of the largest medical evacuation effort of Palestinian children to the United States. Organized by the U.S.-based nonprofit HEAL Palestine, this mission aims to provide life-saving care and long-term support to young victims of the ongoing conflict in Gaza. The arrival of the children at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport was met with cheers, signs, and warm welcomes from community members who gathered to show their support.

The two children, seven-year-old Zuhair and fourteen-year-old Anwar, were among eleven children evacuated through this initiative. Their stories reflect the devastating toll the war has taken on countless families in Gaza. Zuhair sustained severe injuries on October 23, 2023, when an airstrike hit his building while he was playing in his front yard. His arm was partially amputated, and he has undergone multiple surgeries to date. Anwar lost his lower limb while fleeing an airstrike, a traumatic experience that has changed his life forever.

For Anwar’s mother, the arrival in the United States brought mixed emotions. While she expressed deep gratitude for the opportunity for her son to receive treatment, she struggled to hold back tears as she shared the pain of leaving many family members behind in Gaza. She revealed that 105 members of her family have been killed since the war began nearly two years ago. The emotional weight of her loss was palpable, even as she took solace in the fact that her son would now have access to proper medical care and a chance at a better future.

Haneen, a representative of HEAL Palestine, translated the mother’s words, explaining how this moment is filled with both relief and sorrow. The family’s sacrifice underscores the urgent need for humanitarian interventions and the importance of organizations like HEAL Palestine that work tirelessly to assist those affected by the conflict.

According to Nisreen Hajaj, community outreach coordinator for HEAL Palestine, the children will be treated at local hospitals in Texas, where the community is eager to embrace them. She emphasized that Texas is known for its warmth and generosity, promising to show the children and their families the love and care they deserve. The organization’s efforts highlight not only the medical support being provided but also the emotional and social backing these children need as they begin the long journey of healing.

This is not the first time HEAL Palestine has intervened to save lives. Last year, the nonprofit successfully evacuated Adam, a nine-year-old boy from Gaza who was later fitted with a new prosthetic leg in North Texas. These cases serve as a testament to the organization’s commitment to providing long-term assistance to Palestinian children and families suffering the impacts of war, both in Gaza and the West Bank, as well as to refugees across the region.

The broader mission of HEAL Palestine goes beyond emergency medical care. The group works to offer continued rehabilitation, psychological support, and educational opportunities to help rebuild lives shattered by the conflict. By partnering with local communities and healthcare providers in the United States, they create pathways for recovery that extend far beyond immediate treatment.

As the latest group of evacuated children settles into their new surroundings, the hope is that they will not only regain their physical strength but also experience the kindness and resilience that communities in Texas have pledged to offer. For the families, the road ahead remains challenging, but the chance to access world-class medical care brings a glimmer of hope amidst overwhelming hardship.

The story of Zuhair and Anwar serves as a powerful reminder of the human cost of war and the critical role humanitarian organizations play in offering relief to those caught in conflict zones. Through coordinated efforts, HEAL Palestine continues to provide a lifeline to children who would otherwise face insurmountable odds, demonstrating that compassion and action can bring light even in the darkest of times.
