Illinois gas tax pause talks remain active as a scheduled fuel tax increase approaches on Wednesday, July 1, 2026. Gov. JB Pritzker has said he is open to considering a pause, but state leaders have not announced a final plan.
The Illinois General Assembly faces a key deadline on Sunday, May 31, 2026, when the spring legislative session is scheduled to adjourn. That gives lawmakers limited time to act before the automatic increase takes effect.
Illinois gas tax pause debate centers on July 1, 2026 increase
The Illinois Department of Revenue says the state Motor Fuel Tax rate will rise on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, and remain in effect through June 30, 2027. The gasoline tax will increase to 49.6 cents per gallon, while the diesel fuel tax will rise to 57.1 cents per gallon.
The department said the annual increase is tied to inflation under Illinois’ Motor Fuel Tax Law. For July 1, 2026, the percentage increase is 2.68%.
Pritzker told reporters that Illinois has become one of the strongest infrastructure states because of investments supported by the motor fuel tax. He also said there may be enough flexibility to consider “some sort of pause,” but added that the issue would be up to lawmakers.
Why May 31 matters for Illinois lawmakers
The timing matters because the Illinois Senate calendar lists Sunday, May 31, 2026, as adjournment for the spring session. Under the Illinois Constitution, bills passed after May 31 generally cannot take effect before June 1 of the next calendar year unless approved by a three-fifths vote in both chambers.
That makes any gas tax pause more urgent if lawmakers want relief in place before the July 1 increase.
Indiana comparison adds pressure
Illinois’ debate comes as nearby Indiana has moved to suspend fuel-related taxes. Indiana Gov. Mike Braun has said the state’s temporary relief saves drivers nearly 60 cents per gallon.
For Illinois drivers, the question is whether lawmakers will prioritize short-term fuel relief or preserve revenue for roads, bridges and transportation projects. Until the General Assembly acts, the July 1, 2026 gas tax increase remains scheduled to take effect.
