Wise County grassfire reaches Chico Elementary
Chico Elementary School in Wise County, Texas, was evacuated Wednesday after a grassfire spread onto the school campus, according to the Chico Independent School District.
The district moved elementary students to the gym at Chico High School as a precaution while emergency crews responded. Chico ISD said the students were safe following the evacuation.
Fire crews extinguish flames on campus
Fire crews were able to extinguish the fire on Chico Elementary property. The school district reported no injuries, but officials did not immediately provide information about possible damage to buildings, outdoor facilities or other parts of the campus.
Authorities also had not released details about what started the Wise County grassfire or how much land was affected. The evacuation was carried out as crews worked to remove the immediate threat near the school.
Students moved to Chico High School
Chico ISD said elementary students would remain at Chico High School until Wise County Emergency Management determined that conditions were safe and issued an all-clear for the elementary campus.
The district did not announce a specific time for students to return. Parents and guardians were expected to follow updates from Chico ISD and county emergency officials for information about dismissal, transportation or a return to the school.
Emergency officials assess conditions
Wise County Emergency Management was responsible for evaluating conditions before Chico Elementary could resume normal operations. Keeping students at the high school allowed fire crews to work on the affected property while children remained away from the active response area.
