Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has declared that his presidency will end once the war with Russia concludes, making clear that his primary mission is to bring peace, not to extend his political career. In an interview with Axios, he emphasized, “My goal is to finish the war,” and said he would be “ready” to step down after the conflict.

Elections in Ukraine have been indefinitely postponed since 2022, as martial law prevents them from taking place. Zelensky acknowledged that the nation’s security situation makes voting unsafe, but hinted that a ceasefire could open the door to organizing elections. He noted that his parliament holds the mandate to approve such a move if circumstances allow.

When asked if elections would be possible during a multi-month ceasefire, Zelensky confirmed he would support it. He revealed that during his recent meeting with Donald Trump, he raised the issue of elections, suggesting that even a temporary truce could provide the necessary environment for voting.

Elected in 2019, Zelensky’s term was set to expire in 2024, but the war extended his presidency indefinitely. He admitted that Ukraine may eventually need “a leader with a new mandate” to steer the country toward lasting peace. Despite holding a majority in parliament, Zelensky indicated he would not stand in the way of democratic renewal once conditions permit. By signaling his willingness to step aside, Zelensky has reaffirmed that his legacy will be tied to ending one of Europe’s most devastating wars in decades.
