The German Research Center for Geosciences reported that the earthquake measured a magnitude of 6.8 and occurred at a depth of approximately 77 kilometers beneath the ocean floor. Indonesian authorities, however, recorded a higher preliminary magnitude. The national geophysics agency stated that the earthquake registered at magnitude 7.1 with a shallower depth of around 17 kilometers. Differences in readings are common during the early stages of seismic analysis, as agencies rely on different monitoring networks and calculation methods.
Following the main quake, several smaller aftershocks were detected in the surrounding area. Officials emphasized that none of the seismic activity had the potential to generate tsunami waves, easing fears among coastal communities.
