During his historic address to Ghana's Parliament on July 3, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a statement that sparked both surprise and amusement among the members present. PM Modi highlighted India’s vast political diversity by revealing that the country boasts over 2,500 political parties. “I repeat, 2,500 political parties,” he said with a chuckle, prompting a ripple of laughter and surprise among the parliamentarians in Ghana.
This remark was made as part of PM Modi’s larger discussion on the strength of India’s democracy, which he described as not just a political system but a fundamental value ingrained in the nation's ethos. Speaking in English, he emphasized that democracy in India is a reflection of its cultural and societal values. He stressed that true democracy encourages open discussion and debate, and that it unites people while upholding dignity and human rights.
In his address, PM Modi also pointed out India’s unparalleled diversity as a cornerstone of its democracy. He highlighted the fact that 20 different political parties govern various states across the country, alongside 22 official languages and thousands of dialects. This diversity, he noted, is a key reason why people from different parts of the world are warmly welcomed into India.
The statement about India’s vast political landscape was echoed by Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin, Speaker of Ghana’s Parliament, who repeated the number of 2,500 political parties, causing more laughter in the chamber.
This visit, which marks the first prime ministerial trip to Ghana in three decades, is part of PM Modi’s five-nation tour. After Ghana, PM Modi is scheduled to visit Trinidad and Tobago, Argentina, Brazil for the BRICS summit, and Namibia, further strengthening India's international relations.
