Lok Sabha Takes Up Opposition Resolution to Remove Speaker Om Birla Amid Heated Debate

On March 10, 2026, the Lok Sabha took up an opposition resolution to remove Speaker Om Birla from office, citing allegations of bias towards the ruling party. The motion was introduced by Congress legislator Mohammad Jawed, along with MPs K Suresh and Mallu Ravi. As Jawed read out the notice for the resolution, a heated debate began regarding the presiding officer during the proceedings.

AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi raised a point of order questioning the legitimacy of Jagdambika Pal, a member of the panel of chairpersons appointed by Birla, to preside over the motion. BJP’s Nishikant Dubey countered, citing constitutional provisions and House rules. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju clarified that Pal was fully competent to preside over the proceedings and dismissed Owaisi’s concerns.

Trinamool Congress MP Saugata Roy suggested that a specific motion be moved to appoint a presiding officer for this purpose. Rejecting the objections, Pal proceeded with the vote on the notice. Once the required number of MPs stood up in support, the resolution was accepted for discussion. Congress' Deputy Leader Gaurav Gogoi then initiated the debate, with 10 hours allocated for the discussion. The matter of who would preside over the debate on the speaker's removal continued to stir tensions, as the resolution was set to be debated further in the Lok Sabha.
