Om Birla Responds to No-Confidence Motion Defeat, Takes Dig at Rahul Gandhi

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla resumed his duties on Thursday after the Opposition's no-confidence motion against him was dismissed in the House, making a firm statement regarding his role in the Parliament. Birla, addressing the controversy over his conduct, rejected the Opposition's claims of bias and emphasized that the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) is not "above the House," signaling a sharp dig at Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the Congress party. His remarks came as a response to the ongoing tension over Speaker Birla’s decisions during debates.

Birla asserted that his actions as Speaker were always based on fairness, balance, and discipline, aligning with the established rules of the Lok Sabha. In his address, he clarified that no member of the House, including the LoP, had the privilege to speak on any subject without adhering to the standard procedures. He highlighted that even the Prime Minister and other ministers must give prior notice before making statements in the House, challenging the notion that any member, including the LoP, could be given special treatment.

The no-confidence motion brought against Om Birla was the culmination of a heated phase in the ongoing Budget session, which saw the Opposition accuse him of preventing Rahul Gandhi from speaking on various occasions. This included an incident in February where Gandhi was stopped from commenting on the memoir of former Army Chief MM Naravane. The tensions escalated further after the suspension of eight Congress MPs, which led to the submission of a no-confidence notice signed by 118 MPs.

Om Birla strongly rejected the opposition's accusations of partisan behavior, asserting that he always aimed to manage the proceedings of the House impartially and with a strict adherence to the rules. In a particularly emotional moment, he responded to allegations that he controlled the microphones in the Lok Sabha, explaining that no such authority existed. According to Birla, the microphone was only activated for the member permitted to speak, a clarification aimed at dispelling rumors surrounding his actions.

Birla concluded his remarks by underscoring his commitment to ensuring every MP’s voice was heard in the House. He reiterated that this was only the third time in the history of independent India that a no-confidence motion had been debated in the Lok Sabha, and he had always encouraged active participation within the framework of parliamentary rules. The Speaker’s response to the no-trust motion and the ongoing political drama highlights the tense dynamics within the Indian Parliament.
