In a historic electoral outcome, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) claimed a resounding victory in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, securing 206 seats and a two-thirds majority. This victory ends the 15-year reign of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in the state, marking a significant shift in Bengal’s political landscape. The BJP's rise was swift, with the party crossing the halfway mark of 148 seats early in the counting process, signaling a monumental change.
The TMC, led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, secured only 80 seats and was leading in one constituency. The BJP’s vote share surged to 45.84%, a notable increase from the 38% it garnered in the 2021 elections. In contrast, the TMC saw its vote share drop to 40.8%, down from 48% in the previous Assembly elections. This decline, coupled with growing dissatisfaction, contributed to TMC’s setback.
The defeat of Mamata Banerjee, who lost her Bhabanipur stronghold by over 15,000 votes to BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari, was a defining moment in the elections. Adhikari also triumphed in Nandigram, another critical battleground. The BJP’s influence spread across the state, winning constituencies in North Bengal, Junglemahal, border districts, and industrial areas. Constituencies like Kalimpong, Darjeeling, Monteswar, Bhatar, Medinipur, and Asansol Dakshin saw early BJP victories, reflecting the party's growing hold in eastern India.
This electoral success signifies BJP’s long-term growth in West Bengal, where it transformed from a marginal presence into a formidable opposition. The BJP's victory is attributed to its appeal in both urban and rural areas, with a strong focus on development, governance, and an anti-incumbency sentiment that resonated with voters.
For the TMC, the loss is a major blow, attributed to factors such as anti-incumbency, corruption allegations, and growing fatigue among the electorate. With the BJP now in power, the political dynamics in Bengal are expected to change dramatically, setting the stage for new policies and governance in the state.
