Thalapathy Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) Party has emerged as the single largest party in the Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections 2026. However, with 108 seats, it still needs 10 more to reach the magic figure of 118, which is required to form a majority government. As the situation unfolds, the question now is how Vijay will secure these additional 10 seats to ensure his party's rule in the state.
Vijay is set to receive an invitation from the Governor to form the government, but first, he must pass the crucial floor test. According to established procedures, he will need the support of enough MLAs to win this test within a stipulated time. The major question now revolves around which political party or parties Vijay will align with, as he has directly criticized both the BJP and DMK in recent times.
AICC President Rahul Gandhi and Vijay had a brief 15-minute conversation, with rumors suggesting that Vijay had offered a pre-poll alliance to Congress before the elections, but the party chose to stick with its old ally, the DMK. However, after the elections, Congress has reportedly shown interest in supporting Vijay's TVK. This development could play a significant role in forming a government.
In addition to Congress, smaller parties like VCK, CPI, CPM, and DMDK have also expressed interest in supporting TVK. These parties, which secured a combined total of 8 seats, could be crucial in helping Vijay reach the 118-seat mark. However, the challenge lies in meeting the demands of these smaller parties, which could complicate the formation of a stable government. Congress and PMK, both of which secured 5 and 4 seats respectively, have reportedly offered support but are demanding two ministries each.
Vijay's decision on whether to seek support from these smaller parties or align with larger parties like the BJP or AIADMK will be pivotal. The AIADMK, which won 47 seats, could provide the majority support Vijay needs, but allying with the BJP might give TVK the breathing room it needs, although this could damage Vijay’s credibility with Tamil voters, who have long viewed the BJP with suspicion due to its portrayal as anti-Tamil by the Dravida parties.
The BJP, despite winning just one seat, holds considerable influence in Delhi and could use its leverage to support Vijay’s government in exchange for political favors. However, the prospect of a BJP alliance remains uncertain, as the party has yet to announce its interest in supporting TVK.
Ultimately, the battle for the remaining 10 seats will shape the future of Tamil Nadu politics, with the BJP, AIADMK, and smaller regional parties playing crucial roles. Whether Vijay will ally with the Congress, BJP, or other regional players remains to be seen, but the stakes are high as he navigates this political puzzle.
