CM Vijay Sea-View Office Takes Shape In Chennai
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay is preparing to move his main office from the historic Fort St George building to the 10th floor of Namakkal Kavignar Maligai, an 11-storey structure located within the state Secretariat complex in Chennai.
The proposed Chief Minister’s Office will face east and offer a view of the Bay of Bengal. However, reports about a “new building” may be misleading, as the government is renovating and reorganising space inside an existing Secretariat building rather than constructing an entirely new structure.
The Public Works Department is overseeing the renovation. An existing conference hall measuring more than 5,000 square feet is expected to be converted into the new CMO, with space planned for the chief minister’s chamber, meetings with visiting dignitaries, a waiting lounge, an ante-room, a dining area and offices for key staff.
CM Vijay Office Shift Aims To Improve Coordination
The relocation is primarily being presented as an administrative decision. Nearly 30 government departments already operate from Namakkal Kavignar Maligai, while senior bureaucrats and secretaries work from floors close to the proposed CMO.
Officials believe placing the chief minister in the same building will make it easier to hold meetings, move official files and coordinate decisions without requiring staff to travel between different sections of the Secretariat. Vijay’s secretaries, officers on special duty, public relations personnel and other members of his team are also expected to function from the 10th floor.
The existing office at Fort St George is reportedly expected to remain available for selected official engagements even after the new facility becomes operational. The government has not yet officially announced the date on which the chief minister will begin working from the renovated office.
CM Vijay Office To Get Tighter Security
Security and crowd management are also important factors behind the proposed shift. Vijay’s popularity has reportedly resulted in additional public movement and security checks around his present office.
Officials say Namakkal Kavignar Maligai offers more space, lighting, ventilation and easier emergency access than the existing office. Police are preparing stricter entry screening, regulated parking and a controlled route for the chief minister’s vehicle.
Only the chief minister’s car, ambulances, police vehicles and fire engines are expected to be allowed to stop directly in front of the building. Landscaping, parking improvements and removal of obstructions around the structure are also being considered as part of the wider redevelopment plan.
CM Vijay Office Plan Faces Staff Concerns
The office reshuffle has also drawn objections from the Tamil Nadu Secretariat Staff Association. The organisation has raised concerns about limited workspace, the relocation of existing departments and possible inconvenience to employees working inside the building.
The association has also flagged fire-safety and evacuation concerns, arguing that several parts of the Secretariat are already crowded. Departments currently functioning on the 10th floor are being shifted to other locations to create room for the CMO.
While the sea-facing view is likely to attract public and political attention, the stated reasons for the move centre on administrative coordination, improved infrastructure, security and easier access to senior officials. The larger debate will depend on how smoothly the government manages staff relocation, public access and safety arrangements.
