Students in Jharkhand have been protesting over alleged irregularities linked to recruitment and competitive examinations conducted by the Jharkhand Public Service Commission and Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission. The agitation intensified on Monday when protesters marched towards the state Assembly in Ranchi seeking stronger action, including an independent investigation into their allegations. Reports and footage from the protest showed police using force while attempting to stop the march.
The confrontation quickly became a national political issue because Jharkhand is governed by the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha-led coalition, in which Congress is an alliance partner. BJP leaders used that political connection to question Congress over its criticism of police action against protesters elsewhere.

Rahul Gandhi criticised the use of force against protesting students and argued that peaceful protest is a democratic right. In his public response, the Leader of Opposition called for the students' concerns to be addressed through dialogue rather than police action. His remarks placed additional pressure on the Jharkhand government because Congress is part of the state's ruling alliance.
The BJP seized on Gandhi's comments, accusing him of applying different standards to governments depending on which political parties were in power. That argument became a major part of the BJP's protest against Congress MPs in the Parliament complex on Tuesday.

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra confronted BJP MPs during the demonstrations outside Parliament as members from the two sides exchanged slogans and accusations. Congress leaders maintained that their position against excessive police action had not changed and demanded accountability from the government on issues being raised by the Opposition.
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge also reiterated the Opposition's demand that Union Home Minister Amit Shah address Parliament regarding police action being questioned by Opposition parties. Thakur
BJP MP Anurag Thakur targeted Rahul Gandhi over the Jharkhand violence and called for justice for the protesting youth. He argued that Congress should answer for police action in a state governed by an alliance that includes the party.
Thakur questioned whether Congress could criticise the Union government while avoiding responsibility for developments in Jharkhand. BJP MPs consequently turned the student protest into a broader attack on what they described as Congress's political inconsistency.
JPSC-JSSC
The political confrontation risks overshadowing the issue that originally brought students onto the streets: allegations surrounding JPSC and JSSC examinations and demands for a credible investigation. Aspirants have continued seeking transparency and accountability over recruitment examinations, while political parties have increasingly turned the dispute into a national confrontation.
For students, the immediate questions remain whether their allegations will receive an independent examination and how the Jharkhand government will respond to concerns over police action.
