Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay stepped up the Tamil Nadu anti-drug drive on August 11 by leading students in a mass anti-drug pledge in Chennai. The programme forms part of the government's wider Drug Free Tamil Nadu campaign, which combines school awareness, stronger enforcement, rehabilitation and public reporting tools.
Anti-drug pledge brings students into campaign
Students from educational institutions took part in the statewide anti-drug awareness programme, with Vijay administering a pledge against drug abuse. The pledge urged young people to understand the harmful effects of narcotics, stay away from substance abuse, guide friends and family members away from drugs and support people undergoing rehabilitation.
It also encouraged students to cooperate with the government in efforts to curb the production, distribution and consumption of narcotic substances. The official Drug Free Tamil Nadu platform similarly encourages citizens to participate in the state's campaign against substance abuse.
The August 11 observance was officially circulated to educational institutions, including universities and colleges, as part of mass anti-drug awareness activities across Tamil Nadu.
Drug-free app and school clubs get Budget support
The Vijay government has placed schools at the centre of its prevention strategy. Under the 2026–27 Budget, anti-drug clubs and volunteer groups are planned in educational institutions, while the 10581 helpline is being promoted to improve access to drug-related reporting.
A Drug Free Tamil Nadu mobile application is also part of the programme, allowing students and teachers to report suspected drug-related activity anonymously. The Budget provides ₹7 crore for these school-level anti-drug measures.
The approach is significant because it shifts part of the state's anti-narcotics policy from enforcement alone toward early prevention, awareness and confidential reporting within educational environments.
STING teams strengthen narcotics enforcement
Tamil Nadu is also strengthening field-level enforcement through 65 specialised anti-narcotics task forces. The dedicated units are intended to focus on drug trafficking, distribution and consumption, with police personnel assigned specifically to narcotics-related operations. Three such teams had already been formed in Coimbatore as part of the statewide rollout.
The broader strategy includes action against trafficking networks and the legal disposal of confiscated narcotics. Tamil Nadu authorities have previously used authorised facilities to destroy seized drugs after completing required legal procedures.
Rehabilitation and sports target long-term prevention
The anti-drug campaign also places emphasis on rehabilitation and youth participation. Rather than treating addiction only as a policing issue, the government's programme includes support for people recovering from substance abuse and promotes sports as an alternative pathway for young people.
That message was highlighted in June when Vijay flagged off and joined the “Start Run, Stop Drugs” awareness marathon in Chennai. He completed a three-kilometre run and promoted the slogan “Sports-ah Edu, Drugs-ah Vidu,” encouraging young people to choose physical activity over substance abuse.
Tamil Nadu and Kerala plan closer coordination
Tamil Nadu's campaign is also extending to interstate cooperation. Kerala Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala met Vijay in July and said the two states had discussed stronger border surveillance and intelligence sharing to counter narcotics trafficking. Vijay also agreed to support Kerala's Operation Toofan anti-drug campaign, where actor Mohanlal is involved as an ambassador.
By combining student awareness, anonymous reporting, specialised police teams, rehabilitation and interstate coordination, Tamil Nadu is building a broader anti-drug strategy. Its effectiveness, however, will ultimately depend on sustained enforcement, measurable reductions in trafficking and drug use, and consistent rehabilitation support beyond awareness events.
