The Kharge Vande Mataram row intensified on Tuesday, August 18, as Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge defended the version of the national song followed by his party and rejected BJP allegations of disrespect. The dispute has also fuelled a wider Congress-BJP clash as Kharge focuses on strengthening the party in Goa ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.
Vande Mataram Row Intensifies
Kharge told reporters that the rendition followed by Congress was the same version historically associated with leaders such as Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. He argued that Congress had followed the practice for decades and questioned why the party should now be accused of wrongdoing for continuing it. Reports from his Goa visit also confirmed that Congress workers sang two stanzas of Vande Mataram at a party programme attended by Kharge.
The controversy followed Independence Day celebrations at the Congress headquarters on August 15. Video footage showing Kharge and Sonia Gandhi speaking while Vande Mataram was being rendered triggered criticism from BJP leaders. Congress disputed the BJP’s interpretation of the incident, while the opposition party continued to accuse the Congress leadership of failing to show adequate respect to the national song.
BJP Row Expands Into Freedom Struggle Debate
Kharge used his Goa engagements to turn the BJP row into a broader political argument over the freedom struggle. He questioned the historical contribution of the BJP and RSS to India’s independence movement and defended Congress’s association with national symbols and freedom movement leaders.
The Congress chief also targeted Union Home Minister Amit Shah while referring to his own long political career. He accused BJP leaders of repeatedly attacking the Gandhi family and Sonia Gandhi and argued that political disagreements should not be used to rewrite historical practices followed for decades.
Kharge Goa Visit Focuses on Party Unity
Beyond the national song controversy, the Kharge Goa visit carried significant political importance for Congress. The party president met local leaders, workers and representatives from different sections of society as Congress works to strengthen its organisation in the state.
Kharge urged party leaders to remain united and said internal coordination would be essential for challenging the BJP. His visit came amid signs of organisational pressure for the Congress in Goa, including reports that a group of booth-level agents and workers had resigned ahead of his meetings.
Goa Polls Become Congress Priority
With Goa polls expected in 2027, Congress is beginning to sharpen its electoral strategy and strengthen its grassroots network. Kharge said he had spoken with party leaders about contesting the election together and claimed they had assured him they would work collectively to defeat the BJP.
The Vande Mataram dispute is therefore unfolding alongside a larger political battle in Goa. While the BJP is using the national song controversy to question Congress’s position on patriotic symbols, Kharge is attempting to shift the debate towards the freedom struggle, democratic conduct and the coming state election. The issue is likely to remain politically significant as both parties intensify their campaigns ahead of the next Goa Assembly contest.
