Justice BR Gavai Becomes 52nd Chief Justice of India

In a historic moment for the Indian judiciary, Justice BR Gavai took the oath as the 52nd Chief Justice of India (CJI) on May 14, 2025. The oath of office was administered by President Droupadi Murmu at a ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan. With this appointment, Justice Gavai also becomes the first Chief Justice of India from the Buddhist community, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s judicial and social history.

Justice Gavai succeeds Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and will serve as the head of the Supreme Court of India. His elevation to the top judicial position is seen as a reflection of inclusivity and representation in the Indian legal system. Legal experts, political leaders, and social organizations across the country have welcomed his appointment with appreciation and high expectations.

Justice Gavai brings with him decades of experience in law and an impeccable judicial track record. He began his legal career in Maharashtra and was appointed as a judge of the Bombay High Court in 2003. He was later elevated to the Supreme Court in May 2019. Throughout his tenure, Justice Gavai has been known for his balanced judgments, commitment to constitutional values, and a strong sense of justice.

Born in a family with strong ties to Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s ideology, Justice Gavai’s rise in the judicial hierarchy is also seen as an important moment for marginalized communities. His appointment is expected to bring a more diverse perspective to the highest court of the country.

Justice Gavai is set to hold office for a brief but significant term and is expected to oversee several high-profile cases and constitutional matters during his tenure. His judicial philosophy, rooted in equality and justice for all, is anticipated to influence key decisions that could shape the socio-political landscape of India.

The swearing-in ceremony was attended by top dignitaries including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Union ministers, senior judges, and legal luminaries. The solemn event was a reminder of the strength of India's democratic institutions and the peaceful transition of power within them. As Justice Gavai assumes the role of the Chief Justice of India, eyes will now be on the path he carves in ensuring judicial reforms, speeding up case disposals, and strengthening the credibility of the judiciary in the eyes of the public. His leadership is expected to usher in a renewed focus on justice delivery with sensitivity towards India's diverse population.
