Ekadashi Significance and Spiritual Importance

Ekadashi is regarded as a day of prayer, restraint and spiritual cleansing. Devotees worship Lord Vishnu, chant Vishnu Sahasranama and avoid grains and tamasic foods. The observance encourages control over habits, mindful eating and concentration on devotional practices.

Each Ekadashi has its own traditional name and religious importance. Some observances are associated with forgiveness and removal of sins, while others focus on prosperity, family welfare, spiritual liberation or devotion to Lord Vishnu.

Ekadashi Vrat Rules and Types of Fasting

Nirjala fasting excludes both food and water. Phalahar fasting permits fruits, milk and light foods, while a satvik fast allows simple grain-free preparations. Devotees should select a fasting method according to their health, age and family tradition.

Common vrat foods include fruits, milk, nuts, potatoes, sabudana and preparations made with permitted flours. Rice, wheat, lentils, beans, onion, garlic, meat, alcohol and tobacco are usually avoided.

Devotees generally bathe early, wear clean clothes, light a lamp and offer fruits, flowers and Tulsi leaves to Lord Vishnu. Vishnu Sahasranama, Bhagavad Gita passages and Vishnu mantras may also be recited. Anger, arguments, dishonesty and negative speech are traditionally avoided.

Ekadashi Parana Guide and Ritual Practice

The fast is completed on Dwadashi through Parana during the prescribed period. Breaking the fast at the correct time is considered an essential part of the vrat. Parana is generally performed after sunrise and after the restricted Hari Vasara period has ended.

Devotees may begin Parana with water, Tulsi leaves or a simple satvik meal before returning to their regular diet. Charity, feeding people in need and offering food to priests or devotees are also considered auspicious.

Sunrise, Tithi and Parana timings can vary by location. Devotees should therefore consult a local Panchang before beginning or ending the fast. The Ekadashi Calendar 2026 serves as a ready guide for planning fasting, worship and family rituals throughout the year.
