OpenAI Launches Shopping Feature in ChatGPT Search Mode: Faster Product Search and Buying

OpenAI on Monday announced a major upgrade to ChatGPT’s capabilities, introducing a new shopping feature integrated within the ChatGPT Search mode. This enhancement allows users to search for products, compare options, and directly buy items using ChatGPT, similar to the experience of shopping through traditional web search engines like Google. The announcement was made through a post on OpenAI’s official X (formerly Twitter) account, reflecting the company's efforts to further streamline online shopping experiences through artificial intelligence.

According to OpenAI, the new shopping experience aims to make finding, comparing, and buying products simpler and faster for users. The shopping feature is being rolled out within the ChatGPT default 4-o model, and it represents a significant step toward making ChatGPT a more versatile tool beyond simple question-and-answer functions. OpenAI highlighted that ChatGPT Search mode has quickly become its most popular and fastest-growing feature, noting that users performed over 1 billion searches just within the past week. “Search has become one of our most popular and fastest-growing features, with over 1 billion web searches in just the past week,” the company stated.

The shopping feature offers several improvements over traditional search methods. When a user looks for a product, ChatGPT now shows enhanced product results with visual details, pricing, reviews, and direct links to purchase from various online stores. Importantly, OpenAI clarified that the product results are independently chosen and are not paid advertisements, ensuring an unbiased shopping experience for users.

This shopping functionality is being gradually made available to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Free, and even logged-out users across all regions where ChatGPT is active. OpenAI expects the rollout to be completed over the next few days. However, users may encounter minor issues during the initial stages. In live testing, it was noted that while ChatGPT provided working links to major e-commerce platforms like Amazon India and Poochmate, some product links were either inaccurate or led to inactive sites. Visual product details were also not consistently available, likely due to the staged rollout process. OpenAI recommends that users encountering such issues check back after a few days for a smoother experience.

In addition to upgrading the shopping feature, OpenAI has also extended its ChatGPT Search functionalities to WhatsApp. Users can now send messages to 1-800-ChatGPT (+1-800-242-8478) to get real-time answers, updates, and even live sports scores. This marks another step in OpenAI’s mission to make AI more accessible and integrated into everyday communication platforms. ChatGPT has also improved the way it handles citations in its responses. With the new update, multiple citations can be included in a single answer, making it easier for users to verify information and explore diverse sources. Additionally, a new highlight interface has been introduced, showing users exactly which part of an answer each citation supports. This feature aims to enhance transparency and trust in AI-generated content.

Trending searches and autocomplete suggestions are other new additions. These features allow users to discover popular search topics more quickly and receive predictive suggestions as they type, much like what users experience on major search engines. OpenAI’s rollout of shopping features inside ChatGPT Search comes at a critical moment. Just recently, the company expressed its interest in purchasing Google’s Chrome browser if the US Department of Justice compels Google to sell it following the ongoing antitrust trial. OpenAI’s gradual expansion of ChatGPT’s capabilities appears to be a direct challenge to Google’s dominance in both search and browser markets.

By offering an ad-free shopping search integrated directly into ChatGPT and improving the overall user experience with real-time responses, trending suggestions, and better citation handling, OpenAI is positioning itself as a formidable competitor in the evolving AI-driven internet landscape. Users who have already received the update are encouraged to explore the new features and provide feedback as OpenAI continues to refine and expand ChatGPT's capabilities. As the rollout completes globally over the next few days, users can expect a more powerful and comprehensive search and shopping experience directly from the ChatGPT app.
