Sri Lanka’s captain, Dasun Shanaka, has made a heartfelt request to the government following his team’s disappointing exit from the 2026 T20 World Cup. After being knocked out of the Super Eights by New Zealand, Shanaka blamed the "negative environment created outside" for their underwhelming performances. He urged the government to help shield players from criticism to protect their mental health.
Shanaka expressed his sorrow for not delivering a victory that would make Sri Lankans proud, especially after a strong group campaign. Despite the team's promising start, they faltered in the Super Eights, losing to both England and New Zealand. "As players, it's very hard for us to control the outside noise," Shanaka said. He requested that the government intervene to prevent further negativity, which he believes could aid in improving the team's mental well-being.
In addition to external pressures, Shanaka also cited fitness issues and multiple injuries as key factors behind the team’s downfall. Key players like Matheesha Pathirana and Wanindu Hasaranga were sidelined due to injuries, further hampering Sri Lanka’s chances. "The physical fitness is not at the maximum level, and the injuries have been a major setback," Shanaka noted, admitting that other teams seemed to be ahead in terms of fitness.
Shanaka expressed uncertainty about his future as captain, acknowledging the tough decisions that lie ahead for Sri Lanka Cricket. While he’s grateful for his time as captain, he is unsure how long he will continue in the role. Despite the challenges, Shanaka remains committed to working on long-term goals for Sri Lanka’s cricketing future.
