India surged to the fourth position in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) standings after a commanding 336-run win over England in the second Test at Edgbaston. This victory marks a historic milestone for Indian cricket, as it is their first-ever win at the Birmingham venue, ending a long-standing winless streak that included seven losses and a draw. With this result, the five-match series now stands level at 1-1.
Leading from the front, captain Shubman Gill delivered a remarkable performance, smashing a double century in the first innings and following it up with a century in the second. His consistent dominance with the bat provided India a solid foundation and proved crucial in setting massive targets for the hosts. Complementing Gill’s batting heroics was the spectacular bowling performance from Akash Deep, who claimed ten wickets across both innings, exploiting the new ball movement to dismantle England’s top order. Mohammed Siraj also played a pivotal role with seven wickets in the match, while Prasidh Krishna bowled economically despite fewer wickets.
In the post-match presentation, Shubman Gill praised the team's all-round performance. He expressed satisfaction with the bowling attack's execution, especially in the absence of pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah. He noted the importance of scoring over 400 runs on this kind of pitch, asserting that fielding improvements and disciplined bowling helped India secure a big win.
Gill highlighted Akash Deep’s control, rhythm, and ability to move the ball both ways, calling his contribution “magnificent.” He also appreciated Prasidh’s discipline with the ball, emphasizing that wicket-taking is not the only measure of a bowler’s impact.
With this win, India has gained crucial points in the WTC 2025 race. Australia remains on top of the table, followed by Sri Lanka in second and England in third. India’s strong comeback in this Test sets the stage for an exciting remainder of the series as they aim to climb higher in the WTC rankings.
