Carlos Alcaraz withdraws from French Open due to wrist injury

Carlos Alcaraz withdraws from the French Open with a wrist injury, ending his title defense hopes and opening the field for rivals at Roland Garros.

Carlos Alcaraz has withdrawn from the French Open after confirming his decision on Friday, April 24, citing a wrist injury that will prevent him from defending his title at Roland Garros. The Spanish star, a seven-time Grand Slam winner and reigning champion, announced the move via social media, emphasizing caution in his recovery process.

“We have decided that the most prudent thing to do is to be cautious and not participate in Rome or Roland Garros,” Alcaraz said, adding that the setback is difficult but expressing confidence in a stronger return. His team will continue to monitor his condition before determining his comeback timeline.

Alcaraz sustained the injury during the first round of the Barcelona Open, where he defeated Otto Virtanen but later withdrew from the event. Concerns about his fitness grew after he also pulled out of the Madrid Open on Thursday, April 17, signaling that participation in the French Open was increasingly unlikely.

The 22-year-old had entered the clay-court season in strong form, having already secured the Australian Open title earlier this year. He holds a 22-3 record this season and also claimed a title in Doha. Despite his success, he recently dropped from the top world ranking after losing to Jannik Sinner in the Monte Carlo Masters final on Saturday, April 12.

Alcaraz made history as the youngest player to complete a career Grand Slam and delivered one of the most memorable performances at French Open in 2025, saving three championship points against Sinner in the longest final ever at Roland Garros. With Alcaraz sidelined, Sinner and other contenders may find an opening in this year’s tournament, scheduled to run from May 24 through June 7.
