Europe is once again at the center of a growing geopolitical storm, with Moldova emerging as the latest flashpoint in the NATO–Russia confrontation. Russian intelligence has claimed that NATO forces are preparing for a landing in Ukraine’s Odessa region with the ultimate goal of occupying Moldova. The warning comes just days before Moldova heads into its crucial September 28 legislative elections, a vote widely seen as a choice between pursuing closer ties with the European Union or leaning back toward Moscow.
Authorities in Moldova have already acted on fears of foreign interference. Over 70 individuals were arrested during nationwide raids, accused of plotting mass riots linked to Moscow-backed networks. Many of the detainees were reportedly trained in Serbia and connected to plans designed to destabilize the government ahead of the elections. Prosecutors described this as part of a broader hybrid war orchestrated by Russia, involving disinformation, funding of political groups, and attempts to sway voters through social media manipulation.
The Russian Foreign Intelligence Service alleged that EU powers, supported by NATO, are pushing a Russophobic policy in Moldova and planning to enforce it militarily. Reports suggest that NATO forces are gathering in Romania close to the Moldovan border, with an amphibious assault scenario being discussed to exert pressure on the pro-Russian Transnistria region, where around 1,500 Russian troops remain stationed. NATO has not issued direct confirmation of such deployments and insists it has no expansionist agenda, but local sightings of French troops have fueled speculation.
Moldova’s elections have drawn intense international attention. President Maia Sandu’s Party of Action and Solidarity is campaigning on a platform of EU integration, while opposition blocs backed by Moscow push for closer ties with Russia. Analysts say the outcome will shape not only Moldova’s trajectory but also the balance of power across Eastern Europe. A victory for Sandu’s party could accelerate EU accession talks, but a loss could deepen Russian influence and increase security risks for Ukraine and NATO’s eastern flank.
Experts also warn of Moscow’s financial and propaganda networks targeting Moldova’s diaspora, echoing previous efforts in European elections. Western nations, including France and Germany, have expressed strong support for Moldova’s pro-EU stance, framing the vote as a test of Europe’s resilience against Russian interference. For Moldova’s 2.4 million citizens, the stakes are high, as the country finds itself wedged between war-torn Ukraine and NATO member Romania. With tensions rising, Moldova’s fragile neutrality could collapse, transforming it into another battleground in the wider NATO–Russia standoff.
