Congress Leadership Yet to Finalise Kerala Chief Minister Candidate
The Congress leadership is expected to take a final decision on Kerala’s next Chief Minister soon, following the party-led UDF alliance’s strong performance in the 2026 Assembly elections. Senior Congress leader KC Venugopal has emerged as one of the leading contenders for the top post, with party sources indicating strong support for his candidature among newly elected MLAs.
Along with Venugopal, senior Congress leaders VD Satheesan and Ramesh Chennithala are also being considered for the Chief Minister’s position. The Congress high command has reportedly completed internal discussions and is expected to announce its final decision shortly.
Party sources said former Congress president Sonia Gandhi is likely to play a key role in the final selection process, while Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge is expected to formally announce the decision. Leaders in the party have also asked supporters to avoid public campaigns in favour of individual candidates during the ongoing consultations.
The government formation process in Kerala has drawn significant attention as the Congress leadership weighs both political and organisational considerations before choosing the state’s next Chief Minister.
