Fremont Man Survives 9 Days Injured in Himalayas in India, Family Seeks Help for Medical Costs

A man from Fremont, California has defied the odds by surviving more than nine days alone in the harsh and remote Himalayan terrain after suffering multiple injuries during a solo hike. Samuel Vengrinovich, who holds dual citizenship with the United States and Israel, had been reported missing after failing to return from a trek in the mountains of northern India. His story of endurance and survival has not only stunned his family and friends but has also inspired many people who have since stepped up to support his ongoing recovery. Now, as he recovers in a hospital in India, his family has turned to the public for help with mounting medical expenses.

According to his sister Natasha, Samuel had been living in India for the past eight months and had embarked on a two-day hiking trip with a friend on June 6. At some point during the hike, the friend decided to turn back early, but Samuel continued on the trail, planning to finish roughly 40 minutes later. When he failed to return, his friend waited and eventually reported him missing two days later, prompting a full-scale search and rescue mission involving teams from India, Nepal, and Israel.

Despite the coordinated rescue efforts, locating Samuel proved difficult. Natasha recounted that Samuel could see helicopters and tracking teams from a distance but was too far away to signal for help. Injured and disoriented, he continued to walk in search of safety, following a stream and heading toward what appeared to be a distant city. In those grueling days, he kept himself motivated by counting steps and encouraging himself to push forward. Without access to food or clean water, Samuel reportedly survived by eating insects and drinking from natural sources as he tried to navigate his way back to civilization.

When he was finally found collapsed in a village near the Himalayan region, Samuel was severely malnourished, dehydrated, and suffering from multiple injuries. According to Natasha, he sustained a broken wrist, a fractured ankle, bruises on his knees and forearms, and a fractured nose. The emotional toll was just as intense as the physical one, especially upon learning that Samuel had believed no one was searching for him during those long and lonely days. His sister said it saddened her to know he had felt alone, while in reality, loved ones were desperately trying to locate him.

The news of his rescue brought immense relief to his family, though the ordeal is far from over. Samuel remains hospitalized in India and faces a long and difficult road to recovery. His family has since launched a GoFundMe campaign to cover his medical expenses, including surgery, hospitalization, and rehabilitation. The fundraiser has already raised more than $66,000 thanks to the generosity of those moved by his incredible story of survival.

For his family, the focus now is on getting him the care he needs and bringing him home safely. Natasha expressed her overwhelming emotions, saying that while they are grateful he is alive, her heart will not be at ease until she can see and hold him again. Samuel’s story has drawn attention not just because of its dramatic nature, but because it underscores the human spirit’s capacity for resilience and the power of community support during times of crisis.

As donations continue to pour in, the hope is that Samuel will soon regain his strength and return home to heal surrounded by family. His experience serves as a powerful reminder of the risks involved in solo treks in remote regions, the importance of timely reporting in missing person cases, and the immense strength it takes to survive against all odds.
