Gaming Body Urges Amit Shah to Intervene Against Blanket Ban on Money-Based Gaming

The All India Gaming Federation (AIGF) has urgently appealed to Union Home Minister Amit Shah to intervene in the proposed Online Gaming Bill, voicing concerns over the potential harm a blanket ban could cause to India’s burgeoning gaming industry. The federation, in its communication, emphasized the need for "progressive regulation" to safeguard the interests of millions of legitimate players and the broader gaming sector.

A blanket prohibition, the AIGF warned, could force crores of gamers to move to illegal gambling networks and unregulated platforms. This shift would significantly damage the sector, which has been a job-creating engine and a source of substantial revenue for the Indian economy.

Economic Impact and Industry Concerns

The AIGF pointed out that India’s online gaming industry supports over a lakh direct and indirect jobs, including game developers, designers, animators, e-sports professionals, and startups. Valued at around Rs 2 lakh crore, the sector plays a vital role in the country's economy, contributing to tax revenue. The federation warned that if the Online Gaming Bill passes in its current form, it would not only harm legitimate businesses but also open the door for fly-by-night operators who would exploit unregulated markets.

The AIGF has called on the government to adopt a balanced approach that allows for responsible gaming, ensures the protection of players, and fosters innovation within the industry, rather than driving it underground. With the bill currently under active consideration in Parliament, the gaming industry is rallying to convince lawmakers that regulation, not prohibition, is the key to ensuring the growth and protection of both consumers and jobs in the sector.
