The Andhra Pradesh High Court has clarified that there is no legal restriction preventing a Chief Minister or any minister from acting in films, dismissing claims made against Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan. The controversy erupted after Pawan, while balancing his political role, took part in the promotions of his upcoming film Hari Hara Veera Mallu. Critics argued that his involvement in cinema while holding a key administrative position was unconstitutional.
Former IAS officer Vijay Kumar filed a petition seeking an inquiry into alleged misuse of government funds and machinery by Pawan Kalyan for film promotions. The petitioner also claimed that as a sitting Deputy CM, Pawan was barred from acting in movies, describing his actions as unconstitutional.
During the hearing, Advocate General Dammalapati Srinivas, representing the state, pointed out that no such restriction exists under Indian law. He recalled that a full bench of the High Court had previously issued a ruling in the case of former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. T. Rama Rao, who continued his film career while in public office. Srinivas further emphasized that no direction could be given at this stage to file a counter against Pawan in the matter.
On the other hand, advocate Bala, appearing for the petitioner, alleged that Pawan had misused his ministerial position to influence movie ticket pricing. He urged the court to summon related records to investigate this aspect of the case.
The High Court’s remarks make it clear that Pawan Kalyan’s dual role as politician and actor does not violate any constitutional or legal framework. However, the case remains open regarding specific allegations tied to misuse of office, especially concerning ticket pricing decisions. This ruling strengthens the precedent that film careers and political offices can coexist legally, a principle earlier established by leaders like N. T. Rama Rao. For now, Pawan Kalyan can continue his film journey alongside his political responsibilities without legal hurdles.
