Bangladesh Unrest Deepens As Sheikh Hasina Blames Yunus Govt For Rising Extremism And Violence

Sheikh Hasina has accused the Muhammad Yunus-led interim government of losing control of Bangladesh as the country faces growing unrest, rising extremism, and weakening ties with India. The former Prime Minister said that violence has become routine and that the current administration appears unable to stop attacks targeting civilians, minorities, and institutions.

Sharif Osman Hadi, a radical student leader, was shot in Dhaka on December 12 and later died from his injuries. His death sparked widespread protests across the country, exposing deeper tensions and public frustration. Hasina argued that the killing highlights a breakdown in law and order, warning that continued instability threatens Bangladesh’s global credibility and regional relations.

Hasina claimed that extremist groups are gaining influence under Yunus and alleged that convicted terrorists have been released while hardline elements occupy positions of power. She said these developments could damage Bangladesh’s long-standing secular identity and create concern for neighbours, particularly India.

India Bangladesh relations have also come under strain following the mob killing of Dipu Chandra Das, a Hindu youth whose death triggered outrage. India temporarily suspended visa services in Chittagong after a security incident, further reflecting diplomatic unease. With elections scheduled for February, Bangladesh continues to struggle with protests, vandalism, and political uncertainty as calls grow for stronger security and accountability.
