Ohio Bexley High Gown Rentals Cut Graduation Costs and Waste

Bexley High gown rentals helped reduce graduation costs and clothing waste during the school’s 2026 commencement in Bexley, Ohio, on Sunday, May 24, 2026. The student-led effort gave seniors an option to rent gowns instead of buying apparel used for one ceremony.

The initiative was led by senior Prudence Kiener, who connected the project to both affordability and sustainability. Kiener said the goal was to help every senior fully participate in commencement without the burden of purchasing a gown that may only be worn once.

Bexley High gown rentals create a reuse model

After students received their diplomas, they returned caps and gowns to a collection bin so the items could be reused by future graduates. The process turned commencement into a visible example of how schools can reduce single-use clothing waste while keeping graduation accessible.

Kiener also pointed to the environmental cost of graduation apparel, noting that many gowns are made with fossil-fuel-based fibers that do not biodegrade easily. By collecting and reusing the gowns, the school created a practical alternative to the annual cycle of buying, wearing and storing graduation clothing.

Student-led sustainability effort gains support

Lisa Goldsand, founder of Circular Thrift, supported the project and helped move it forward. Goldsand said the idea matched her work around sustainable fashion and reflected Bexley’s broader interest in community-based reuse.

The Bexley High School gown rental initiative now offers a simple model other schools could consider: lower graduation costs, reduce clothing waste and give students a direct role in shaping more sustainable school traditions.
