Google Maps has changed the display name of Lake Ontario to “Lake America” for users in the United States following an executive order from President Donald Trump. The move has triggered a fresh US-Canada dispute, while users in Canada will continue to see the traditional Lake Ontario name.
Trump Order Drives Map Rename
Trump announced the name change amid a growing trade dispute between Washington and Ottawa involving reciprocal tariffs on billions of dollars in goods. The order affects how US federal agencies identify the lake, but it does not require Canada or other countries to adopt the new name.
The decision adds a symbolic political element to already strained relations between the neighbouring countries. Lake Ontario is one of the five Great Lakes and spans the international boundary between the United States and Canada.
Google Maps Updates US Display
Google said it follows official government naming databases when deciding how geographic features appear on Maps. For locations in the United States, the company relies on the Geographic Names Information System, or GNIS.
Under the updated system, people using Google Maps in the US will see “Lake America,” while users in Canada will continue to see “Lake Ontario.” People outside both countries will see both names displayed.
Google said this approach follows its long-standing policy for geographic names that differ between countries. The company used a similar system after the United States renamed the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America in 2025.
Canada Rejects Lake America Name
The change has received a sharp response from Canadian political leaders. Prime Minister Mark Carney rejected the new name, making clear that Canada would continue referring to the body of water as Lake Ontario.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford reinforced that position by unveiling a lakeside sign carrying the message “Lake Ontario: Now and Always” in English and French. The response reflects broader Canadian resistance to the Trump administration’s decision.
New York Pushes Back
Opposition has also emerged inside the United States. New York Governor Kathy Hochul said her state would not adopt the Lake America name despite the federal executive order. New York is the only US state bordering Lake Ontario.
Meanwhile, White House Communications Director Steven Cheung welcomed Google Maps’ change and publicly celebrated the Lake America label after it appeared for American users.
Great Lakes Naming Dispute
The Google Maps update does not create a universally recognised international name. Instead, it demonstrates how digital mapping platforms handle politically disputed or country-specific geographic labels.
For US users, Lake America now reflects the federal government’s official naming database. For Canadians, Lake Ontario remains unchanged. The split display means the same Great Lake will appear under different names depending on where a Google Maps user is located, turning an otherwise technical mapping update into another visible point of friction in US-Canada relations.
