NYC ICE Shooting Protests Erupt After Man Shot With Child in Car

Hundreds of demonstrators marched through New York City on Friday, October 9, after federal immigration agents shot a Dominican man while his five-year-old child was inside his car. The incident sparked NYC ICE shooting protests and a political confrontation between Mayor Zohran Mamdani and President Donald Trump's administration.

Oscar Belgal, 28, suffered a gunshot wound to his neck during an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operation in Marble Hill on Thursday. His child escaped physical injury, but the shooting raised concerns about public safety and federal immigration tactics.

NYC rally demands accountability after shooting

Protesters marched through Manhattan, calling for ICE to leave New York and demanding answers about the shooting. Demonstrators criticized the use of armed federal agents in residential areas, particularly during operations involving families and children.

Mayor Mamdani condemned the incident and called for ICE operations in the city to end. He also posted "Abolish ICE" on X and spoke with President Trump and Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin about Belgal's detention.

Marble Hill shooting raises public safety concerns

The shooting occurred around 4 p.m. in Marble Hill, a Manhattan neighborhood bordering the Bronx. According to the mayor's office, federal agents surrounded Belgal's vehicle while wearing construction-style vests and face coverings.

Mamdani questioned whether residents could clearly identify the armed officers as federal agents. He also stressed that the shooting occurred on a busy street shortly after schools had dismissed students.

The presence of a young child inside the car added to concerns about how immigration arrests are conducted in crowded neighborhoods.

ICE video shows confrontation before gunfire

Video footage shows plainclothes officers approaching a silver vehicle with weapons drawn. The car briefly reverses before moving forward as agents attempt to stop it.

The footage has prompted questions about the confrontation, but it does not establish every detail of the encounter or determine whether the officers' use of force was justified.

Authorities have faced demands to release additional recordings and explain the decisions that led to the shooting.

DHS claims officers faced an immediate threat

Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin defended the operation, saying agents believed their safety was at risk. He also stated that officers did not know a child was inside the vehicle.

Senior ICE official Marcos Charles alleged that Belgal refused orders to exit his car, struck two government vehicles and drove toward officers.

Federal authorities maintain that their agents responded to a dangerous situation. Those claims remain disputed as investigators examine the incident.

ICE policy dispute deepens in New York

The shooting has renewed disagreements over New York's sanctuary-city policies, which limit local cooperation with federal immigration enforcement.

Trump administration officials argue that such restrictions make arrests more difficult. Mamdani and other critics contend that aggressive enforcement methods threaten community safety.

The incident has also increased scrutiny of federal agents operating without standard uniforms and the risks involved in vehicle confrontations.

As authorities review the evidence, New Yorkers continue demanding transparency and accountability. The case could deepen the dispute between city leaders and federal officials over immigration enforcement and the use of force.
