Sunset Park House Fire
Six people died and nine others suffered injuries after a fast-moving fire engulfed a two-storey wooden house in Brooklyn's Sunset Park neighbourhood early Thursday, November 5, 2026.
The New York City Fire Department received an emergency call at approximately 1:39 a.m. about flames at 653 58th Street, near Seventh Avenue. Firefighters reached the building within four minutes but encountered intense flames spreading through the basement and both upper floors.
Four adults died at the scene, while two others were taken to a hospital, where they later died. Authorities have not publicly identified the victims.
FDNY Emergency Rescue Operation
The FDNY emergency rescue operation involved 231 fire and medical personnel across 74 units. Crews battled flames on multiple floors while searching for residents trapped inside the building.
Firefighters rescued four people, including two trapped behind window bars at the rear of the property. A staircase partially collapsed during the emergency, forcing crews to use a portable ladder to reach the upper floor.
Chief of Operations Kevin Woods said firefighters prevented the blaze from spreading beyond the exterior of one neighbouring house. Officials declared the fire under control at approximately 4:28 a.m.
Brooklyn Fire Victims and Injuries
The Brooklyn fire victims and injuries prompted an emergency response from city authorities. Four other civilians were injured, along with three firefighters and two police officers who sustained minor injuries.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani expressed condolences to the victims' families and described the incident as a devastating tragedy for the neighbourhood.
Eight displaced residents received temporary hotel accommodation with support from the American Red Cross. City officials said they would assess further assistance for affected families.
Lithium-Ion Battery Fire Investigation
The lithium-ion battery fire investigation remains ongoing as FDNY fire marshals examine evidence recovered from the damaged property.
Investigators discovered a lithium-ion battery at the scene, along with heavily damaged equipment believed to include a bicycle and a stand-up scooter.
Officials stressed that the battery's presence does not establish the cause of the fire. Investigators have not confirmed whether it contributed to the blaze.
New York City Fire Safety Warnings
New York City fire safety warnings have gained renewed attention following the tragedy. FDNY officials urged residents to prepare household escape plans and ensure family members know how to respond during emergencies.
With winter approaching, Mayor Mamdani also reminded tenants to report inadequate heating through the city's 311 service and avoid unsafe electrical practices.
The investigation continues as Sunset Park residents mourn the six people who lost their lives. Authorities said they would release further findings once the cause is established.
