Shubman Gill, India’s Test captain and batting sensation, stunned cricket fans with a mammoth 754-run tally in the recently concluded five-match Test series against England. His consistency at the crease made him the highest run-scorer of the series and earned him the prestigious Player of the Series award for India. Gill’s total is now the second-highest ever by a captain in a single Test series—only behind Don Bradman’s record of 801 runs.
However, the latest ICC Men’s Test Rankings revealed a surprising development. Gill, who was ranked 9th prior to the final Test, dropped four spots and now sits at the 13th position. The dip in his ranking has raised eyebrows, especially given his overall dominance in the series.
Despite his stellar form throughout the first four Tests, Gill managed only 32 runs in the fifth and final Test. Since ICC rankings are based on a rolling point system that factors in recent performances and the weight of each match, this low score in a high-stakes match significantly affected his rating. The rankings also reward consistency, and failing to perform in the final Test meant a loss of valuable rating points, pushing him out of the Top 10.
While Gill’s dip caught attention, others saw a surge. Yashasvi Jaiswal, who struck a century in The Oval Test, climbed three spots to enter the Top 5 with 792 rating points. Meanwhile, Joe Root and Harry Brook continue to hold the top two positions firmly.
Indian fast bowlers Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna reached career-best ratings after their match-winning spells at The Oval. Siraj, the Player of the Match in the final Test, took crucial wickets and rose 12 places to secure the 15th spot with 674 points. Krishna, who claimed eight wickets, climbed 25 places to reach 59th position with 368 points. These performances underlined India’s bowling depth and were pivotal in clinching a dramatic six-run win.
England’s pacers Gus Atkinson and Josh Tongue also reaped the benefits of their performances in the same match. Atkinson, after taking eight wickets, broke into the Top 10 for the first time, while Tongue jumped 14 places to settle at 46th.
Despite the rankings shuffle, Shubman Gill’s series performance remains historic. While a single poor game caused a short-term drop, his long-term form and leadership make him one of India’s brightest stars in red-ball cricket. As the next Test series looms, fans will be keen to see if Gill can reclaim his Top 10 spot and continue his stellar run in international cricket.
