Actress Pratyusha Case Verdict After 23 Years: Supreme Court Rules Out Murder

The tragic death of actress Pratyusha, one of the most debated incidents in Telugu cinema history, has finally reached legal closure after 23 years. The Supreme Court delivered its long awaited verdict, ruling out allegations of rape and murder while upholding the conviction of Siddharth Reddy for abetment of suicide. The judgment marks the end of a prolonged legal battle that has remained a topic of public discussion since 2002.

Pratyusha, who was just 20 years old at the time, was admitted to Care Hospital in Hyderabad on February 23, 2002, along with her boyfriend Gudipalli Siddharth Reddy after allegedly consuming pesticide mixed with a soft drink. While Siddharth survived, Pratyusha passed away the following day. Police initially treated the case as a suicide attempt linked to family opposition to their inter caste relationship. However, her mother Sarojini Devi consistently maintained that her daughter had been sexually assaulted and murdered, alleging that influential individuals were involved and that evidence had been manipulated to stage the incident as suicide.

Two years after the incident, a local sessions court convicted Siddharth Reddy under charges of abetment of suicide and attempt to suicide, sentencing him to five years in prison. The Andhra Pradesh High Court later reduced the sentence to two years and imposed a fine. Appeals from both sides eventually reached the Supreme Court. After examining the available evidence, the apex court confirmed poisoning as the cause of death and dismissed charges of rape and murder. However, it upheld Siddharth Reddy’s conviction for abetment of suicide and directed him to surrender within four weeks.

The case had drawn massive attention in the early 2000s, especially with the rise of 24 hour Telugu news channels that broadcast extensive debates and theories surrounding the incident. Over the years, Pratyusha’s mother continued to campaign for stricter punishment and reclassification of the case as murder. The latest verdict may legally conclude the matter, but the emotional impact and public debate surrounding the actress’s untimely death continue to resonate. For many in the Telugu film industry and beyond, the Pratyusha case remains a reminder of how celebrity tragedies can evolve into prolonged legal and social controversies spanning decades.
