UK Graduate visa 2027: Who gets 18 months or two years?

UK Graduate visa 2027 rules will reduce post-study work permission to 18 months for most eligible non-doctoral graduates applying from January 1. However, the October 28, 2026 Budget proposes a two-year visa for graduates of qualifying universities. Full eligibility criteria remain pending.

The UK Graduate visa 2027 rules will change how long international students can remain in the United Kingdom after completing their studies. From January 1, 2027, most eligible non-doctoral graduates applying for the visa will receive 18 months instead of two years.

However, the UK government's October 28, 2026 Budget announced plans to retain a two-year Graduate visa for students completing courses at universities meeting specified performance standards.

UK Graduate visa to fall to 18 months in 2027

Under the published immigration rules, graduates completing eligible bachelor's or master's degrees will receive 18 months of post-study permission if they apply on or after January 1, 2027.

Applicants submitting eligible applications before that date remain covered by the existing two-year duration. Graduates completing a PhD or another doctoral qualification will continue to receive three years.

The Graduate Route allows eligible international students to remain in Britain to work or look for employment without requiring employer sponsorship.

Who could qualify for a two-year Graduate visa?

The October 28 Budget proposes preserving the two-year Graduate visa for students graduating from universities demonstrating high compliance with immigration requirements and strong labor-market outcomes.

This could give graduates from qualifying institutions six additional months compared with the standard 18-month period.

However, the government has not published the complete eligibility criteria or confirmed which universities will qualify.

What the changes mean for Indian students

Indian students pursuing degrees in the UK may face different post-study opportunities depending on their application date and whether their university qualifies for the proposed exception.

Prospective students should distinguish the confirmed 18-month rule from the separately announced two-year provision.

University rankings alone do not establish eligibility for the longer Graduate visa, as the government has linked the proposed exception to institutional compliance and graduate employment outcomes.

When will the new eligibility rules be confirmed?

The 18-month duration is already reflected in the UK's published Immigration Rules for applications made from January 1, 2027.

The two-year exception announced in Budget 2026 still requires further rules and implementation guidance. Until those details are released, students cannot assume that graduating from a particular university will guarantee the longer visa.

Further Home Office announcements will determine which institutions qualify and how the exception will operate.
