UK Skilled Workers May Get Six Months to Find New Jobs

UK Skilled Worker visa job loss rules could change in 2027 under proposals announced in the October 28, 2026 Budget. Certain highly skilled sponsored employees may receive up to six months to find new jobs instead of the usual 60-day curtailment period. Eligibility details remain pending.

The United Kingdom plans to give certain highly skilled foreign workers up to six months to find new employment after losing a sponsored job. The proposed change, announced in the UK Budget on October 28, 2026, could provide additional time for eligible professionals to secure another employer sponsor.

The UK Skilled Worker visa job loss reform is expected to be introduced in 2027, although the government has not confirmed its precise implementation date.

UK Skilled Worker visa curtailment to change

Under the proposal, the highest-skilled sponsored workers could receive a visa curtailment period of up to six months when their employment ends.

The duration would depend on how long the individual worked in their previous highly paid job. The government has not yet published detailed eligibility criteria or confirmed how the extended period will be calculated.

The measure is intended to help skilled employees remain available to UK businesses while searching for new sponsored positions.

Current UK visa 60-day rule after job loss

Under existing immigration guidance, sponsored workers whose employment ends may have their permission shortened to 60 days, or the remaining duration of their visa if shorter.

During this period, affected workers generally need to secure another eligible immigration route, submit an appropriate application or prepare to leave the country.

The proposed six-month arrangement would offer additional time to qualifying workers, but it is not yet an automatic entitlement for everyone holding a Skilled Worker visa.

Finding a new employer sponsor in the UK

Workers seeking another sponsored position must satisfy the immigration requirements applicable to their new employment.

A new employer generally needs an appropriate sponsorship licence and must provide a valid Certificate of Sponsorship. Workers changing employers must obtain the required immigration permission before starting their new sponsored role.

The proposed extension could give qualifying professionals more time to complete this process.

What international professionals should know

The planned reform could benefit eligible overseas employees, including Indian professionals working in highly skilled positions across the UK.

However, the six-month period will depend on future eligibility rules, including the worker's previous employment circumstances.

The government expects implementation during 2027. Until the revised rules take effect, affected workers must follow existing immigration requirements and any individual Home Office notification about their permission to remain.
