Punjab is grappling with its worst floods since 1988, with the devastating effects of swollen rivers causing massive destruction across the state. As of today, 37 lives have been lost, and all 23 districts of Punjab have been affected by the floodwaters, which have been exacerbated by heavy rainfall in the catchment areas of the Sutlej, Beas, and Ravi rivers in Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir.
The floods have heavily impacted areas such as Gurdaspur, Pathankot, Fazilka, Kapurthala, Tarn Taran, Ferozepur, Hoshiarpur, and Amritsar districts. To ensure the safety of students and staff, the Punjab government has decided to close all educational institutions, including government, private, and recognized schools, colleges, and universities, until September 7.
Amid the crisis, Punjab Cabinet Ministers, along with senior Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Manish Sisodia, visited flood-affected villages in Tarn Taran district. The leaders assessed the condition of embankments and engaged with local residents to address the challenges caused by rising river waters. Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan is also set to visit the flood-hit areas, where he will review crop damage, particularly in Amritsar, Gurdaspur, and Kapurthala districts.
More than 1.48 lakh hectares of crops have been destroyed, intensifying the plight of farmers in the region. Army teams are working tirelessly to strengthen embankments at vulnerable points, transport food and fodder to isolated areas, and clear water channels to prevent further flooding.
The situation has drawn support from celebrities, with actor Shah Rukh Khan expressing his condolences, stating that "the spirit of Punjab shall never break." Other notable figures, including Sonu Sood, Diljit Dosanjh, Gippy Grewal, and others, are lending their support to those affected.
Despite relief camps being set up by district administrations, many villagers prefer to stay in their homes, and those whose livestock shelters are flooded have taken refuge on rooftops. The Punjab government has initiated a special 'girdawari' (loss assessment) process to determine the extent of the damage and has assured compensation for those affected.
Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann visited the affected areas and appealed for national support, stating, "Whenever the country faced a crisis, Punjab always stood by it. Today, Punjab is in crisis, and I hope the country stands by us." The devastating floods in Punjab have caused widespread destruction, but the collective efforts of local authorities, celebrities, and citizens offer hope as the state works to recover and rebuild.
