Bangladesh Railways Expanding Fleet with 200 Coaches from India by 2027

Bangladesh Railways is planning to enhance its fleet with 200 broad-gauge coaches from India, with the first deliveries expected to begin in 2026 and complete by December 2027. Railways Minister Shaikh Rabiul Alam shared this information in Parliament, stating that the project is backed by financing from the European Investment Bank. This significant addition to the rail network is expected to improve the quality and capacity of the railway services across Bangladesh.

The new coaches will be crucial for expanding the railway services, particularly for the intercity routes. Bangladesh Railway authorities are set to introduce new train services as soon as the coaches start arriving. This expansion is also aimed at increasing the number of intercity trains, especially on the routes connecting Dhaka with the northern districts, which currently operate 15 trains. The fleet expansion will be followed by efforts to further modernize the railway system, with plans to procure additional locomotives and coaches.

To further strengthen the railway infrastructure, the government is also considering additional investments. These include the purchase of 260 broad-gauge passenger coaches, 46 broad-gauge locomotives, and 50 metre-gauge locomotives. These investments are intended to meet the growing demand for rail travel and ensure better connectivity across the country.

Currently, Bangladesh's railway network spans 3,428.09 kilometers, with a mix of metre gauge, broad gauge, and dual gauge tracks. The government is committed to expanding the network by launching new projects based on demand and feasibility studies, with a long-term vision to modernize and improve the overall railway system for both passengers and freight services.
