Kothapallilo Okappudu: Director Praveena Paruchuri Confident of Success – An Exclusive Interview
You are both a producer and an actress. When did the idea of coming to direction come up?
I’ve always been interested in direction. Since childhood, I have been crazy about films. I started with learning Andhra dance, then moved to Kuchipudi. My exposure to acting, music, and literature started early. I went to the U.S. for acting classes and later did a short filmmaking course. I realized directing is a difficult craft, so I decided to produce and learn from that experience. My last two films have provided me valuable insights into all aspects of filmmaking.
How did the story for Kothapallilo Okappudu begin?
During the pandemic, we all went through a tough time. As a doctor, the experience was even more difficult. At that time, I didn’t think much about films. But after doing a short film in collaboration with Mickey Meyer, I came back to India, and the idea for this film just came to me. I believe it will be a good entertainer, just like C/O Kancharapalem.
How is your character in the film?
My character is fun and strong. Women in rural areas are usually tough, and my character is no different. It’s different from my real-life personality, but I found it exciting. The film has two fantastic scenes, and one of them is as powerful as the ‘Jathara’ sequence from Pushpa. I hope it entertains everyone. The screenplay and visualization of the film are excellent.
You’re a doctor and have a busy professional life. How did you get the idea of doing films?
Being a doctor, I’m always busy, but I needed a creative outlet. Cinema has always interested me, and I believed that pursuing films would give me that outlet. Acting in C/O Kancharapalem was required, and this film also has a very fun character. But directing was always my ultimate goal.
There seems to be a supernatural element in the film’s trailer. Can you tell us more about that?
The film has a supernatural element, but it’s not a horror film. We explore the belief in village deities, which is common in rural India. I’ve always been interested in these beliefs, and we’ve showcased them in a neutral way in the film.
What is the biggest challenge you faced while making this film?
The biggest challenge was managing time. Balancing my medical practice while also overseeing the film’s post-production was tough. But it was a learning experience.
What has Rana Daggubati’s role been in this film?
Rana Garu has been incredibly encouraging, especially since C/O Kancharapalem. He really liked the film and presenting it is an honor for us. We are grateful for his support.
What have you learned from making this film?
This film taught me that willpower is key to achieving anything. No matter how many obstacles you face, with determination, you can accomplish your goals.
What is the best compliment you’ve received for this film so far?
At a press meet, someone said that this film feels like a big Vamsi film. That made me very happy. The story also reminds people of Jandhyala Garu’s films, which is a huge compliment.
What kind of films do you want to make in the future?
If this film succeeds, I would love to make more films. I’ve always wanted to do an action film, and I dream of making a martial arts movie in the future.
Any final message for the audience?
I hope everyone enjoys Kothapallilo Okappudu. It’s a great family entertainer, and we are excited for you to watch it on July 18th. Thank you for your support!
All the best
Thank you
