The 71st National Film Awards, announced by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting on August 1, 2025, have honored the best in Indian cinema. Among the top winners, Vikrant Massey and Shah Rukh Khan shared the Best Actor award for their outstanding performances in 12th Fail and Jawan, respectively. Meanwhile, Rani Mukerji took home the Best Actress award for her powerful portrayal in Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway.

Vikrant Massey’s portrayal of Manoj Kumar Sharma in 12th Fail, a biographical drama directed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra, earned him the Best Actor honor. The film, based on the real-life story of Sharma’s rise from poverty to becoming an IPS officer, showcased Massey’s remarkable ability to depict vulnerability and determination. This performance, along with the powerful direction, made the film a standout of 2023.

On the other hand, Shah Rukh Khan’s dual role in the action-packed blockbuster Jawan, directed by Atlee, earned him shared Best Actor recognition. Khan played Azad, a jailer and vigilante, and Vikram Rathore, his older version. His versatile performance was lauded for balancing emotion, action, and star power. Jawan also became one of the highest-grossing films of the year, highlighting Shah Rukh Khan’s ever-present appeal.

Rani Mukerji’s Award-Winning Performance in Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway

Rani Mukerji won Best Actress for her role in Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway, a film based on the real-life ordeal of Sagarika Chakraborty, a Bengali mother whose children were taken away by Norwegian child welfare services due to cultural differences. Mukerji’s portrayal of Debika, a mother who fights the system to get her children back, was deeply emotional and earned widespread critical acclaim. The film not only resonated with audiences but also won her a Filmfare Critics Award.
