Bakasura Restaurant 2025: Director SJ Shiva Discusses in Exclusive Interview
What is the storyline of "Bakasura Restaurant"?
SJ Shiva:
Bakasura Restaurant is a hunger comedy entertainer, blending horror, comedy, thriller, and emotions. The story revolves around a gluttonous ghost, Bakasura, who enters the lives of a group of bachelors and causes chaos. We believe the audience will enjoy this unique genre combination and appreciate the storyline.
Why did you cast comedian Praveen in the lead role?
SJ Shiva:
Initially, we had discussions with other heroes, but they preferred solo-hero films, which didn't fit our story's ensemble cast. We then heard that Praveen was planning to debut as a lead actor, so we narrated the story to him. As soon as he heard it, he was convinced, saying, "The story is the hero, let’s do it."
What’s your background?
SJ Shiva:
I completed my International Business Management in London and worked as an assistant director for Virupaksha. My father has produced a few films, and to fulfill his dream, I turned director. My elder brother became the producer for Bakasura Restaurant.
Is the story set entirely in a restaurant?
SJ Shiva:
Yes, the plot revolves around a young man who dreams of opening a restaurant. We've combined this with elements of horror, thrill, comedy, and emotions to make it a complete package for the audience.
Is "Bakasura Restaurant" an experiment with a new genre?
SJ Shiva:
Absolutely. This is a completely new genre – hunger comedy. We believe the audience will enjoy this experimental commercial film, much like how Yamaleela and Ghatotkachudu resonated with audiences. The food-loving ghost story will be a unique experience.
Is it true that producer Dil Raju is distributing the film?
SJ Shiva:
Yes, Sirish garu from SVC watched the film and appreciated it. After a detailed discussion about the story, we are thrilled that a renowned producer like Dil Raju is releasing our film.
Why the high budget for a film with no big stars?
SJ Shiva:
We trusted the story and invested in quality filmmaking. Nowadays, having a big star doesn’t guarantee success, but strong content always works. Instead of spending money on star fees, we focused on production value.
Who will relate to this story the most?
SJ Shiva:
The film will resonate with everyone, especially those who remember their bachelor life. The character of Bakasura, played by Viva Harsha, adds a fun and emotional touch to the narrative.
How was your first experience as a director?
SJ Shiva:
Directing is tough, especially when people focus on everything except the story. In the film industry, it's often about the budget and expectations, but I believe in focusing on the story to deliver entertainment.
What kind of films do you plan to make in the future?
SJ Shiva:
I’m inspired by filmmakers like Vithalacharya, known for fantasy and folklore films. I want to make movies in that style. Currently, I have a script for a faction-action entertainer, something Telugu audiences haven’t seen in a while.
Will there be a part 2 of Bakasura Restaurant?
SJ Shiva:
No, Bakasura Restaurant concludes the character’s emotional arc in this film itself. There won’t be a sequel.
What is your goal as a director?
SJ Shiva:
I aim to make films efficiently and in fewer working days. Puri Jagannadh garu is my inspiration. As a director, it’s important to use the producer's money effectively, ensuring everyone benefits. For instance, we made Bakasura Restaurant on a ₹5 crore budget, but it looks like a ₹12 crore film on-screen.
