Boney Kapoor Reveals Real Reason Sridevi Declined Baahubali Role

Baahubali remains one of India’s most iconic cinematic projects, and the casting of its characters has been discussed widely over the years. While Ramya Krishna’s portrayal of Sivagami became legendary, not many know that the late actress Sridevi was initially approached for the role. For years, speculation surrounded why she turned down such a monumental project, with rumors suggesting that she made unreasonable demands, including lavish hotel stays and a massive paycheck.

However, in a recent interview, her husband Boney Kapoor set the record straight. He clarified that the decision was not about extravagant demands but about professional respect and financial fairness. According to Boney, the producers offered Sridevi a fee lower than what she had received for English Vinglish. He explained that Sridevi was not a struggling actor and that her presence would add immense value to Baahubali. Therefore, he insisted she should be compensated appropriately, even more than her previous project, to reflect her stature in the industry.

Boney further revealed that miscommunication from the production team played a major role in the fallout. He recounted that after initial creative discussions, director SS Rajamouli left the room, and it was during the commercial talks that misunderstandings arose. The producers allegedly conveyed incorrect information to both Rajamouli and veteran filmmaker K Raghavendra Rao, claiming Sridevi demanded excessive amounts, which, according to Boney, was untrue.

He also dismissed reports about the producers covering their personal expenses during the English Vinglish shoot in New York. Boney clarified that while he stayed with Sridevi in her suite, he personally paid for their children’s rooms and flights.

Reflecting on the episode, Boney Kapoor stated that while there was no regret about not doing Baahubali, he was disappointed with how the situation was misrepresented. He admitted that destiny had its way, as Ramya Krishna turned out to be a flawless choice for Sivagami, embodying the powerful and commanding presence the role demanded.

The revelation adds another layer to the history of Baahubali and shows how behind-the-scenes negotiations and misunderstandings can change the course of cinema. Fans still wonder how different the portrayal of Sivagami might have been if Sridevi had accepted the role, but for many, Ramya Krishna remains irreplaceable in creating that unforgettable aura.
